FREE PHOTOSHOP TUTORIALS
Welcome to another article from Red Pixel Media! In today’s tutorial we will be showing a few hidden tools found within Adobe Photoshop and also reviewing a few previous lessons. After firing up photoshop, find a perfect image for our black and white with color tutorial. We’ll be starting with this:
Now we’re going to use the color range filter found under “Select”:
This is a super quick and easy way to select our flowers. Once you click the color range button a dialog box will pop up where you will use an eye dropper to select the color from your image. We selected right in the centre of one of the flower petals. Then play around with the “fuzziness” bar. In our case we brought it all the way up to 200. Then select OK. The flowers will now be selected with the “marching ants”, however we still want to touch up a few areas. This is easily done with the quick mask tool found at the very bottom of the tool palette. For more review on quick mask go here.
Once you have your flower or other object selected go Select –> Inverse. Then Image –> Adjustments –> Desaturate. You’ve successfully extracted your one color… however I went one step further. I actually changed the color of my flowers by going to Image –> Adjustments –> Hue/Saturation and clicking the “colorize” button. More review found here.
Optional step: I wanted to get a feeling of depth within the photo, so with my image still selected (inverse of the flowers) I added a gaussian blur filter.
Optional step: I also increased the contrast of the flowers.
This is my final product:
Due to being color blind, you may think my flowers are crazy frankenstein thing’s, however they look great to me!
